Building the palette step by step

A Southwest palette is easiest to get right when you build it in layers, from the largest surfaces to the smallest accents.

Walls and floors (about 60%): sand, warm white, adobe beige or pale clay. These keep rooms bright under strong sun.
Furniture and large textiles (about 30%): warm wood tones, rust, terracotta and sage. This is where solid wood pieces do most of the work.
Accents (about 10%): turquoise, deep indigo, copper or black iron in pillows, pottery and frames.

Testing colors at elevation

High-desert light is cooler in the morning and very warm at sunset, so paint swatches can look completely different by evening. Paint a large sample on two walls and check it at 9 a.m., noon and dusk before committing. Hold your wood samples or product photos next to the swatch to make sure the undertones agree.

Pairing wood with the palette

Terracotta walls look best with honey or golden oak, which keeps contrast soft.
Sage walls pair well with walnut or dark acacia.
