A year-round care plan for high, dry country

Northern Arizona combines low humidity, intense UV at elevation and big temperature swings between day and night. Solid wood handles all of this well with a little attention.

Winter: heaters and wood stoves dry the air the most. Run a humidifier and keep furniture at least three feet from stoves and baseboard heat.
Spring: wind brings fine dust. Dust weekly with a slightly damp, well-wrung cloth, then dry immediately; dry grit scratches finishes.

If a tabletop looks pale, feels rough, or water no longer beads on it, it is time for oil. Apply a thin coat, let it sit for 15 minutes and buff off the excess. Shelves and the sides of sideboards need oil less often than tops but benefit from a yearly coat.
